School Board of Directors
The Khalsa School Calgary Educational Foundation Board of Directors provides governance and oversight for the school, including strategic direction, financial stewardship, policy development and organizational accountability. The Board works to support the school’s mission, long-term goals and continued success.
The Board’s role is to establish the overall direction of the Foundation, approve policies and budgets, and provide appropriate oversight. Day-to-day school operations are delegated to the Principal and administration, who are responsible for the school’s daily management, instructional programming, staff supervision, student discipline and implementation of Board-approved policies in accordance with applicable requirements.
The Board and school administration have distinct and complementary responsibilities. Board members do not independently direct staff, intervene in routine school operations or take over matters that fall within the Principal’s and administration’s responsibilities. This clear division supports consistent decision-making, respects staff roles and ensures that students and families receive appropriate and timely support.
Board Composition and Selection
Under the Foundation’s bylaws, the Board is structured to consist of seven voting members:
- Three parent representatives elected by Foundation members in good standing.
- Four representatives appointed by Dashmesh Culture Centre (DCC), from its Executive Committee and the public, in accordance with the Foundation’s bylaws.
Board members serve three-year terms. Under the bylaws, DCC-appointed members’ terms begin on October 1 of the election year, while parent representatives’ terms begin on January 1 of the following year. Elections and appointments are conducted in accordance with the Foundation’s bylaws.
The Principal and Vice Principal serve as non-voting, ex-officio members in a consultative capacity, as required.

Communication and Community Engagement
The Board maintains communication with Foundation members through the Annual General Meeting (AGM), other meetings convened in accordance with the bylaws, and official announcements. Board members may also attend school events and community functions to support the school’s mission, recognize student achievements and celebrate the accomplishments of the Khalsa School Calgary community.
The AGM and other formal Board meetings provide opportunities for members to participate in matters that fall within the Board’s governance responsibilities. These meetings are not intended to replace the school’s established administrative processes for addressing individual concerns, classroom matters, student behaviour, staffing or other day-to-day operational issues.
Contacting the Board
Parents and community members are encouraged to direct questions and concerns to the appropriate person so they can be addressed efficiently and through the proper channels.
- Student, classroom or staff-related concerns: Please contact the classroom teacher or school administration, following the school’s established process.
- Day-to-day school operations: Please contact the Principal or the appropriate administrator, including the Vice Principal, as appropriate.
- Board governance matters: Concerns relating specifically to the Foundation’s governance, Board responsibilities or matters within the Board’s authority may be submitted in writing to adminteam@khalsaschoolcalgary.ca.
The Board respects the responsibilities delegated to school administration and expects operational matters to be addressed through the appropriate administrative channels before being escalated, where appropriate. Board members do not act as an alternative route for resolving routine school concerns or independently convene meetings with parents to address matters that fall within administration’s responsibilities.
